The first is acceptable for use in dry to damp conditions, like in a covered porch or patio. The second type is created for wet conditions, such as a gazebo or uncovered patio. Since I was placing mine in a covered patio, I limited my search to incorporate those outside ceiling fans designed for dry to damp conditions.
Then I started taking a look at all the different styles out there and I could not believe how many there were to choose from! I found masses of outside ceiling fans in traditional designs that are functional and affordable, but a little too boring for my tastes. That would definitely add to the general ambiance of the yard, which was precisely what I would have liked to do.
