One good example – at least for my house where they’re very popular – is planting snow peas. The Second Secret is Succession Planting Very simply succession planting is taking advantage of the seasonality of some herbs and vegetables so that you can plant more than one crop in any space. The roots in each pot are more than adequate to absorb everything your plant needs. Now, there is no denying that over the course of the summer, those pots will get pretty full of roots and from time to time you might even need to trim the roots that creep out of the bottom of the pots, but that’s OK.
A planter that's 32 inches long x 8 inches wide and 7 inches high will easily hold four pots that are each just slightly smaller than a gallon. But you can fit four tomatoes each in a one gallon pot in a single 32 inch planter and with an independant trellis system you don’t need to worry about disturbing the roots to hammer in stakes for them to grow on. For example, if you plant a row of tomatoes in your garden, you need to space them at least two feet and in some cases three feet apart. They also don’t need to spread out to provide stability for the plant.
Because vegetables and herbs growing hydroponically are constantly provided with the moisture and the nutrient that they require to grow, the roots don’t need to spread out as far through the ground to seek out moisture or nutrient.
