Metal Kitchen Cabinets Are Back

Metal kitchen cabinet's popularity suffered in recent decades as manufacturers came out with a broad range of relatively low cost units, often made of particle board with applied veneers, today the solidity of metal cabinets has renewed appeal to many. They are very low maintenance and easy to keep clean. While new ones are not the lowest priced of available options, bargain hunters who are willing to invest some time and effort can often locate vintage units over the internet, and there is at least one website dedicated to bringing together buyers and sellers.

The market for used metal kitchen cabinets tends to be very local, as they are expensive to ship, so Craigslist is a good place to look for them. In one case involving a friend of mine, he owned a house that was re-assessed at a ridiculous level by the county, so he abandoned it. He soon saw an ad in the Craigslist "wanteds" seeking a whole set of metal kitchen cabinets, which he had left behind. Long story short, he ended up selling the set for $2,000, and the buyer dismantled and hauled them away. Moral of the story, be proactive and place an ad seeking such units if you are interested in having them!

While metal kitchen cabinets can have a virtually unlimited life (shelf life?), eventually they will lose their luster. If you want to renew them you have a variety of options. At the high end, you can have them stripped and powder coated or professionally re-painted after disassembling them. Some painters will do the work in place, however. For those interested in a do it yourself project, there are options. Probably the most cost-effective for the results gained is to buy cans of appliance epoxy and apply it according to the instructions. There is not a great deal of color choice in doing so, however.
